Albumlets
Albumlet #2 - "Stick Figures"
|
The second albumlet called "Stick Figures" was released at the beginning of December 2011. It features four new songs about riveting topics such as: one's daily routine, the universe, arguments, and the zombie apocalypse. The piano is the central tonal instrument and the songs are more percussive. Listen to it (or download it!) at the LWJ bandcamp page... |

Albumlet #1 - "Fermenting"
|
The first albumlet called "Fermenting" was released at the end of October 2011. The four songs wrestle with love, pain, suffering, but take joy in friendship. Electric organ is prominent, and a variety of other instruments provide bits of color here and there, from accordion to bottle blow. Listen to it (or download it!) at the LWJ bandcamp page... |

"Idea" - From the Bells in the Tower to the Drums in the Studio
|
Idea is a suite of pipe organ "duets" composed, performed, and recorded in the spring of 2011. While at college, Lucas played a variety of instruments, some for just a couple months and some for the whole four years. This piece pulls them all together in a finall hurrah. Included are: carillon, guzheng, drum set, steelpans, and pipe organ. Watching it in full screen with nice speakers or headphones is recommended for maximum enjoyment. |
Concepts
The "ALBUMLET"
The term "albumlet" is one coined by Lucas Will Johnson, meaning a brief album of music. Like an album, an albumlet strives for its own sound and statement. But rather than spending the time on a full set of twelve(ish) songs, the briefer version allows the songwriter to quickly move on to different flavors and alternative approaches. It is a great tool for a new artist trying to find a sound, or for a more experienced artist looking for a new direction.
Most importantly, it means the listeners get to hear new music sooner!
The "SONG A DAY"
Far from being a LWJ original concept, the "song a day" is another useful musical tool for songwriters. The idea is fairly straightforward - write and record a song in one day. The result is not always perfect, but it can open up opportunities that might have otherwise been missed.
In December 2011, Lucas Will Johnson recorded a "song a day" for two weeks (and made videos!). Watch the YouTube playlist of all fourteen of the "song a day's" here...
