About That's Greed The lyrics came first. There was a song my band, chump, had written, for which I had written these words. Chump was dying, and I liked the words too much, so I came up with some music for them. I'm writing this 'about' in 8/2008, and I don't really remember the process of writing. I can say though, that the song is pretty much in a structure of ABCABC. There's no particular coda - everything happens, and then everything happens again. I do want to talk about how the song got arranged eventually. I had a lot of fun with the color on this one. The chorus- the vocals are doubled in falsetto, which gives it a cool eerie sound. Also, the guitar is doubled but split between ears, to make it sound fuller. I used the organ as a commentary - little melodies at the beginning of the verses, and then the high squeal which gets sustained during the second chorus. During the little bridge sections after the chorus, the guitar pans across to neat effect. That section was supposed to feel rather lost but still with a rhythmic drive. Also during that section I used the gu-zheng my grandmother gave me which she got in China (except she called it something that sounded like 'joong'). It's the plucked-string sound but the notes bend up and down. Also I did the 'ooh's as a spur-of-the-moment thing, but I really like how they keep the song dark in a different kind of way. The harmonica during the second verse is reverse-echo, which gives the verse sharpness. I could go on about little things here and there, but those are the most notable. As for the song as a whole, I'm really satisfied with the unity of message this song has. It's about greed, but in a much more longing way. It's an abstract greed - I don't remember writing the lyrics with any particular thing in mind, rather a litany of all the times in my life when I ever wanted something, from a candy bar to love. But the harmonies and melodies definitely frame the lyrics well. The verses feel a bit chatty to me - a lot of words with the same little melody, but that might kind of support the feeling of wanting, and wanting, and wanting, and wanting. The original chump version was much more chromatic, yet rockin', and the lyrics then were a bit more greedy greed. But I fiddled with them a little and redid the song entirely myself.
