about texture 1 This was a short recording project I did in October/November 2010 using the studio at Stanford's CCRMA. I decided to throw out any sort of idea of "sections" in a song and be entirely organic about the piece. I also tried to (relatively) divorce myself from rhythm. instruments: snare (3 separate tracks, some with different sticks... I rub my keys on the head at one point) piano accordion (2 separate tracks) voices (3 tracks, briefly) I did the continuous snare track, panned left. Then each subsequent instrument, I played along with whatever had been recorded so far, playing off of whatever else was going on. It was the most purely "jam"-like thing I've done. Basically, I noticed the type of music you write is very much a function of HOW you write it. In this case: layered improvisations with little variety in terms of harmony, and little attention to rhythm. It's a texture piece, I realized eventually. Someone made a comment: "like a movie soundtrack" I recommend putting it on the speakers and listening to it without distractions once. No more. It's an interesting experience, but not THAT interesting to repeat.
