About Painting the Country Wild I recorded this song in one take. I played the guitar and sang at the same time, which was an interesting configurations of microphones and guitar and my mouth. Especially since I didn't know the words/song that well so I was glancing at my computer screen for the lyrics. The story of the song is basically this: at school I randomly started writing some lyrics, and came up with some ideas about a couple people who have tons of energy and do strange things and run around a desert. Climbing cacti. I just had fun coming up with strange images. Then I forgot about the words. Then when I was trying to come up with lyrics for a different song, I came back to these lyrics, and finished them. Then I decided they didn't fit. So I scrapped them. But I had been fiddling around with guitar all summer and had come up with a couple cool things that fit together a bit. So I slapped the words with these couple guitar things, recorded it in the multi-track mode, which wound up sounding terrible since the timing was off in several places, so I did it all at once. The song desperately needs polishing and practicing and editing, so think of this recording as a first draft. You'll get the idea, even if the flow is a little off. I dedicate this song to all of my crazy friends who live by the mantra of "epic".
