About Its the Same Old Thing I wanted to videotape myself recording a song, with all of the instruments, and then edit it into a little music-production-video thingy. But I didn't have a full song yet, and I was impatient to do this. So I did another one of those songs where I make it up as I go, it turns out decent and fun, but it's not a full thought-out song. So I recorded drums, then cowbell, then maracas, then piano, then harmonica, then guitar, then vocals twice - all the while with video rolling at the same time. It's proof that the classic (minor key) 1 - 1 - 4 - 5 progression always sounds good. It's also proof that the rhythm section really drives the song. A song like this without the groove would be extremely boring. The lyrics turned out to be a fun little expose on destroying definitions. They were inspired by the idea that I was just doing the same kind of simple make-it-up-as-you-go song; same old same old. I just extended that sentiment to pretty much everything. Technically, I came up with the first line first, when I glanced over at the bookshelf where there was a beethoven bust and a little buddha statue, both of which I got when I was overseas (in Vienna and Bangkok respectively). I liked the idea of both of them in the same sentence. Alliteration helped too. Also. The best part of the song is after the music stops.
