About Comedy I think I recorded this somewhere between summer 06 and summer 07. I might be entirely wrong though. Anyhoo - the story of its creation is thus: I was in the mood for writing some kind of longer melody that lasted more than one or two quick measures. I also was in the mood for dorian mode. So that's the story of the melody played by the guitar. The verse (music) was created because I needed a verse. I liked the bass part I came up with for it, how it was in an odd meter, so it grew from that. The chorus - I had been studying Leonard Bernstein and how in West Side Story he used the minor AND major third at the same time, to create an interesting dissonance. So I fiddled on the organ a tad and came up with a little riff. The breakdown - it's a piece of the melody and part of the chorus broken down and then repeated a bunch - a kind of variation on a motif idea. The outro/spacy/bassawesomeness - I had been goofing around with hammer-ons played up high on a bass and decided to record it. Added crazy effects made it sound awesome, so I had to include it. As for the color of this song - instrumentation is pretty straightforward... a little harmonica played badly... the most fun part was layering the vocals during the bridge and the last chorus to just give it extra harmonic texture. And the lyrics...well I was in a mode of explaining certain simple nouns (comedy, greed, ...I guess just those two songs really...) so - it's a bunch of examples of humorous events, with a chorus expressing the same thing. Oh yeah and the intro - just came up with a few guitar chords. I like how it sets up the song with a question "why are they all so funny?" - I feel like you don't hear that in songs too much. Also, as a whole song, I like the way this one turned out. It feels very coherent and purposeful, but without being too pedestrian. I still like it. Also, it's about laughing.
